:: Happy tugboat ::

“Surprise is key in all art.”
— Oscar Niemeyer

Today the sunshine was out, over 60 sketchers turned up to sketch, draw, paint and talk together and it was an amazing day. The site was actually very rewarding as there were a multitude of things to paint… actually we will have to come back! Old grain silos, wonderful vistas of Old Montreal, a beautiful red tugboat, Habitat 67, boaters, people, bikers galore and much more. Everyone said that they wanted to come back, and they are right! We will -) Sketchers from as far away as Victoria B.C. showed up, the Eastern Townships, Sherbrooke and Burlington, Vermont. What a neat crowd of people, and we all seemed very happy to be there. It was a very rewarding day.

I took a picture of all of us (except moi the photographer) holding our sketchbooks and grinning into the camera. Enjoy and hope to see you next month, for the 4th Sunday at Marché Jean-Talon -)

:: Weekend of prepping ::

— SOLD —
In proportion to his force,
the artist will find in his work an outlet for his proper character.
— Ralph Waldo Emerson, “Art”

A weekend of prepping courses, drawings & paintings for a future show in November which I will talk about at a later date, prepping my watercolour paraphernalia in order to be ready for tomorrow’s Montreal Urban Sketching meet-up and finally trying to prepare some relaxing time too!

The semester started with a bang, and I was quite exhausted by the end of the week. Young people have tons of energy and start fidgeting if you do not keep them challenged/entertained… Challenging students while helping the ones that are struggling — quite a feat I must admit and I easily get energized out.

What I have noticed is that drawing or painting boosts my energy levels and gives me a sense a satisfaction like nothing else can.This took me about four hours to complete, as I had to stop several times as my hand was crisping — LOL -) I feel so bloody satisfied once a drawing or painting has been accomplished, it is an incredible feeling… and for the feeling to endure, I must be satisfied with my art. So today I am satisfied.

:: The lopsided pine ::

La Barre and other Musicians
9 May 1663.
At Mr Jarvas’s my old barber, I did try two or three borders and periwigs, meaning to wear one, and yet I have no stomach for it, but the pains of keeping my hair clean is so great. He trimmed me, and at last I parted, but my mind was almost altered from my first purpose, from the trouble that I foresee will be in wearing them also.

I have been reading a booklet entitled: Costume in Art by the National Gallery in London and the themes are quite funny sometimes as you can read in the above two paragraphs. Every century has its own moments of pain…

Met up with two of my sketching friends, Mai & Linda at my Cegep today. The weather was gorgeous and the friendship too! I was also glad to give a tour of my beautiful campus and in the afternoon we moved on to the McGill part of the campus to sketch some farm silos. Had a nice day.

Paper: Hand•book Field watercolour journal

:: Quills ::

One smile can start a friendship,
one word can end a fight.
One look can save a relationship,
one person can change your life.

I am starting to prep for my oncoming semester by doing some quick basic pen strokes with my newly filled up Platinum Carbon Fountain Pen, which I love by the way and has to be the best buy there is as it is quick inexpensive (approximately $20 Cdn). This is the first sketchbook that I used when I started drawing and I still love it as this is the older version of glazed paper that they used to sell… now with the newer version of Moleskine Sketchbooks the paper is quite thinner and is not as good quality as before as it has lost the glaze that makes writing and drawing such a pleasure as the ink glides on the paper… alas!
