Draw what is there :: Dessiner ce qui est là

So the apple today was there on the table for me to draw… with a graphite pencil. I am trying to figure out how to draw in pencil and as I was perusing Ruskin’s book, and looking closely at his drawings, I can see that his lines are often parallel with some distance between them. So this is my pencil practice. I also tried applying what he says in his quote “to really draw what is there”.

Aujourd’hui cette pomme était sur la table de cuisine, et c’est elle que j’ai dessinée, au crayon graphite. En regardant les dessins à la mine de John Ruskin, j’ai remarqué que ses dessins au crayon sont souvent faits avec des lignes distancées et parallèles. Donc voici ma pratique au crayon. J’ai essayé d’appliquer ce que Ruskin dit: de vraiment dessiner ce qui est là”.

Restaurant Casseau Blanc Restaurant

A pencil drawing at the Restaurant Casseau Blanc in Valleyfield. I do not know why, but I am not very attracted to pencil drawings… I guess that it is because I have never done much of these. So I am giving them a try, to see how it goes… This was done in the Hand•book Sketchbook which the Avenue des Arts owner gave me, and I truly appreciate it… it’s quality is very good.

Un dessin au crayon graphite… je ne sais pas pourquoi, mais je ne suis pas beaucoup attirée par les crayons graphite — peut-être à cause que j’en ai fait très peu? Donc je me pousse à en faire et à expérimenter, pour au moins mieux comprendre ce médium, qui pour certains, semble exquis!  Ceci a été dessiné dans un Hand•book Sketchbook que le propriétaire du magasind d’arts Avenue des Arts m’a donné et que j’apprécie beaucoup.

St. Marthe Sunset :: Soleil couchant à Ste-Marthe

Today I rushed out of the house at 3:45 pm to catch the Ste. Marthe sunset… and in the end it was too dark in the car to keep on going, so I had to finish this painting in the house, where it is warm. This little village stands on a steep hill overlooking the Quebec scenery, and we can actually see the peak of Lyon Moutain in Vermont, USA (quite far away). It has a population of about 1000 residents, and was founded in 1855.

Today I followed Raynald’s advice, and drew from scratch with my fountain pen (instead of doing it first in lead). It was quite liberating, took less time and my pen stroke was not hesitant–it got going, without looking back–and I drew very fast! When I draw with a pencil, my pencil line often hesitates, stops, ponders and then gets going again at a very slow pace…. I think that he is right.

Aujourd’hui je suis sortie vite de la maison pour aller peindre le coucher de soleil de Ste-Marthe, petit village de 1000 résidents juché sur le haut de la montagne et ayant un point de vue saisissant. Nous pouvons voir le sommet de Lyon Mountain aux États-Unis.

Raynald m’a conseillé d’essayer de peindre directement avec ma plume au lieu de commencer avec un crayon. Et vous auriez dû voir, c’était quelque chose! La plume semblait avoir une vie, elle allait très vite et n’hésitait pas du tout. Tout le contraire de travailler au crayon. Quand je dessine au crayon, mon trait prend son temps, hésite, peut se faire effacer, et reprend son petit bout de chemin, arrêtant de temps en temps. Aujourd’hui la plume déambulait sur le papier, aucune hésitation. C’était vraiment trop cool à voir ;-) Raynald, tu as raison!
