:: Inktober Recap ::

     When you were here before
Couldn’t look you in the eye
You’re just like an angel
Your skin makes me cry
     You float like a feather
In a beautiful world
And I wish I was special
You’re so fuckin’ special
     But I’m a creep, I’m a weirdo.
What the hell am I doing here?
I don’t belong here.
     I don’t care if it hurts
I want to have control
I want a perfect body
I want a perfect soul
     I want you to notice
When I’m not around
You’re so fuckin’ special
I wish I was special
   But I’m a creep, I’m a weirdo.
What the hell am I doing here?
I don’t belong here.
     She’s running

Inktober 2017 was the first time that I tried this daily challenge.  The aim is to draw something that has a specific theme and these were “the” challenge, not the drawing!. To get the idea first was “the” difficulty, and once you had figured it out, then you could draw it and everything went smoothly. Some days I had these very weird ideas, spaced out and looney and other days, quite simple!

I must say that I am already looking forward to the next one in 2018. Why? It simply blew my mind! I loved it. For years I had not tried drawing nor painting from my imagination as I did not know where to start… and #Inktober2017 gave it to me. The first days were excruciating as I did not know what to draw and how to draw it… but slowly and surely, I went from 1.5 hours a night to 30 minutes… and some even less, which is a major perk when you have a full-time job. It also showed me that there are many different ways of drawing and painting, and each way is different and as difficult as the other. Drawing from the imagination is difficult and drawing realistically is too. However, it liberated me. The act of drawing from the imagination seems to have triggered off something that permits me to draw without any expectations… I just do it. I am in the present moment. Yes!

So for this InktoberI drew in two different sketchbooks, as one had already been started and the other one did not have 31 pages. But next year I will either make my own sketchbook and dedicate it entirely to the Inktober 2018 challenge. I will also only draw in black ink, diluted or not… no colours. I will go for a “pure” Inktober month -) So if you have not participated in this yet, try it out next year as I will.

Below are the tools that I used for the month of October. If you wish to know in more detail the names and brands, just comment and I will answer you.

So now I am ready to paint and draw in colour, as I did miss this.

:: Inktober 31 Mask Theme ::

Here is a Haida Nation Mask, a native northwest coast people that live in the northern parts of British Columbia, Canada. I have always loved their masks and today I decided to draw one from a reference photo, in order to honour their art. For #Inktober no colours were added, even though their masks have red and gold in them…

:: Inktober 30 Found Theme ::

And so it is that life begins.

A step into the crazy maze of life.
First a left and then a right,
We find ourselves at a dead end.
Back track our steps and begin again.
Twists and turns constantly taking our path,
Round and round in circles we go,
Trying to find the right way.
Some spend their whole lives in the maze,
Some make it out.
I’m still fighting to find the right way in
This maze of life.

Far over the Misty Mountains cold,

:: Inktober 19 Clouds ::

Rows and flows of angel hair
And ice cream castles in the air
And feather canyons everywhere
I’ve looked at clouds that way
     But now they only block the sun
They rain and snow on everyone
So many things I would have done
But clouds got in my way
     I’ve looked at clouds from both sides now
From up and down and still somehow
It’s cloud’s illusions I recall
I really don’t know clouds at all
     Moons and Junes and ferries wheels
The dizzy dancing way you feel
As every fairy tale comes real
I’ve looked at love that way
     But now it’s just another show
You leave ’em laughing when you go
And if you care, don’t let them know
Don’t give yourself away
     I’ve looked at love from both sides now
From give and take and still somehow
It’s love’s illusions I recall
I really
— Both Sides Now by Joni Mitchell

I was dreaming of fluffy, beautiful, light clouds… and I drew the digital cloud instead…. humph! Why? Because it is our world now, and we have to make do with it…  like it or not…

:: Inktober 14 Fierce ::

The scariest moment is always just before you start.
— Stephen King

For the #Inktober2017 Fierce theme today my thoughts went to a giant tsunami wave and then was inspired by Katsushika Hokusai’s beautiful iconic wave. This tsunami is hovering over skyscrapers, waiting to crash down on them… geez! I am having some very positive thoughts aren’t I?

:: Inktober Teeming ::

#Inktober Teeming Theme.

After thinking about it, I came back to the drawing board and decided to change my subject as I was not too happy with my coffee cup. So here is the new one, and I am indeed happier with this one as the idea is mine (Nicholas G. had given me the other idea and I guess that if it does not come from your gut, it does not work… thanks Nicholas!)

:: Inktober 12 Scatterbrain ::

It’s not what you gather,
but what you scatter that tells what kind of life you have lived.

— Helen Walton

The #Inktober2017 theme today is “scattered” and it is in sync with my present frame of mind! With too much correcting, teaching, preparing courses and planning a future exhibit, I am getting tired. Yikes! What I want to do is just paint, draw and relax… I yearn to curl up and just read a good book. But I guess that this will have to wait until the Christmas holidays. Sigh…

:: Inktober 11 Run ::

I’ve developed a new philosophy.
I only dread one day at a time!
— Charlie Brown

Today’s theme was “run” and I thought of someone having control over a storm but too stupid to let it go… humph! So run damnit! Perhaps thought that he is trying to save the city, and bringing it elsewhere? But it’s too late…

:: Inktober 10 Gigantic ::

“The emotions have … their own sense of scale. In the emotional world a small thing can touch the heart and the imagination every bit as much as something impressively gigantic.”
— Henry Beston

For this gigantic theme, I had quite a few ideas… a gigantic meteorite coming towards Earth (I thought too close to our current fears), then had this idea of a giant pumkpin sitting somewhere in the dark. I chose this idea because I still wanted to test out a bit more the effects of Dr. Ph. Martin’s Pen-White and also to try out my new Black Star Matte ink colours… and wow! Usually black leaves streaks of grey, but not this one. It is dense, opaque, non streaking and can be diluted with water too. The grey sky colour is a mix of the Black Star colour with the Pen-White colour and this one did streak, but still good as the white is very opaque too. I am glad with these experiments today.

:: Inktober 9 screech theme : The invisible driver ::

The creative process helps reduce stress and anxiety.
Creativity retrains you to accomplish just for the self instead of others.
— Debbie Mandel

The screech theme, so many options available. I thought first that I could draw an owl in full flight screeching at its victim. Then I thought of someone screaming at someone. Then I thought of a car screeching past me… and that was it!

This Inktober challenge is a great challenge and at the same time so needed. It is forcing me to discover ideas and how to plan without having the “real” thing in front of me, something that I have been relying on in past years, then changing and playing with different mediums. In watercolour, when it comes to adding white the choices are always very difficult as when I add Titanium White it fades by 30%, never stays at 100% opacity. Then I tried white gouache and it pretty much did the same thing. Lo and behold, today I bought Dr. Ph Martin’s Pen-White ink and wow, it does not dilute on the paper and stays at 100%…. yeahhhh! Where this ink is the thickest, it takes awhile to dry (it is still drying at the moment, so this is why I took a picture of my painting instead of scanning it in) and I can use it with my paintbrushes and it is water soluble… can I ask for more? No!

I also discovered a new app for my iPhone which works very well for taking pictures, cost me $3.99 and it takes really nice night pictures. It is called Camera+ and when you are taking the picture, there is a grid that appears to keep things straight, which is very helpful.

:: Inktober 8 Crooked Theme ::

Why do you paint?
For exactly the same reason I breathe.
— E.E. Cummings from Brainpickings.org

These Inktober themes are really challenging me as I usually am more of an Urban Sketcher, meaning that I try to paint what I see in my environment and not through the computer screen, nor photographs and oh my, certainly not from my imagination! Well, not anymore as these themes have to be found within me and then drawn or painted as I see fit… they are never close to what I had in mind, but I think that the correlation between my imagination and my pen is improving.

I drew in pencil first, as I do not have the courage for now to go straight to ink pen as I usually do, and then I went over with my Hero 573 Fube Nib Fountain Pen. I originally thought to keep this in a  monochromatic black theme, but I got carried away as usual… some buildings in the distance, a road and this “crooked” person stealing an innocent bystander.

:: Inktober 6 Sword ::

Beneath the rule of men entirely great
The pen is mightier than the sword. Behold
The arch-enchanter’s wand! itself a nothing!
But taking sorcery from the master-hand
To paralyze the Caesars, and to strike
The loud earth breathless! Take away the sword;
States can be saved without it!

— Lytton

I used the Hero 573 Fube Nib as it is a highly flexible tool. It can make very fine lines (when you use the fountain pen upside down) and if you draw at an angle, creates very thick lines. It is also a flexible nib meaning that be pressing on the nib, more ink flows out which makes drawing with one pen only ideal. I really liked using it today, even though it does take some time to get used to it. It is a very heavy fountain pen though, so for those of you who like drawing “light” this is not your pen.
