Back to basics :: Retour à la base

What has roots as nobody sees,
is taller than trees,
up, up it goes,
and yet never grows?
— J. R. R. Tolkien, The Hobbit
(The answer will be given on my next post)

When I have not painted in awhile, I need to get back to basics and get the rustiness out of my system. Yesterday I brought back the colours in my eyes by creating a colour wheel. Tonight, I created a tonal value for a future painting using one colour only, Payne’s Grey. I realized at the end of this sketch that I should have diluted three different pools of wash… a very light blue wash, a mid-tone wash and then a very dark wash… this way three tonal values would have been ready. I could have also used five tonal values but as my sketch is quite small, it was best to stay at three. This building is on my College campus, which is the most beautiful campus in Montreal, in my point of view.
