Now that I am old and infirm I fear I shall no more be able to roam among the beautiful mountains… I can only paint my pictures and spread my colour over the cloud-topped mountain to transmit for future ages the hidden meaning which lies beyond all description in words.

It must be the beginning of the semester that is challenging my ways of painting as today I decided to paint with huge, flat brushes instead of my favourite round ones.To do this I got help from Ron Ranson’s book “Skies in Watercolour” (which is great!). The first painting that I did is the one on top and as you can see, not a success. Then the second painting is better and I think that the third try is the best one. To do these paintings I used a 1″ flat brush (Ranson recommends to use a “hade” brush of 2″ which I do not have and have just ordered from Curry’s). Everything was done with the flat brush, the sky, mountains, lake, except for the big central tree which I did with a squirrel hair brush. No fountain pen, no ink, hardly any lines, I am quite happy with this as with a big brush you cannot go into details, you are thinking about the big shapes and I needed to start thinking this way as I was getting too tight with my line drawings and then paintings…
Le début de la session me pousse à changer mes façons de peindre, comme aujourd’hui, et j’ai décidé de peindre avec d’énormes pinceaux plats à la place de mes pinceaux ronds préférés. Pour faire j’ai reçu de l’aide du livre de Ron Ranson sur comment peindre les ciels (qui est excellent!) . Le premier tableau que j’ai fait est celui du haut et comme vous pouvez le voir, pas un grand succès . Ensuite, le second tableau est mieux et je pense que la troisième tentative est la meilleure. Pour faire ces peintures, j’ai utilisé un pinceau plat de 1″ (Ranson recommande d’utiliser un “hade” pinceau de 2″ que je n’ai pas et que je viens de commander chez Curry’s). Tout a été fait avec le pinceau plat, le ciel, les montagnes, le lac, à l’exception du grand arbre central que j’ai fait avec une brosse à cheveux d’écureuil. Pas de plume fontaine, ni encre, à peine pas de lignes, je suis très heureuse de cet essai car ça m’aide à penser aux formes et de ne pas rentrer dans les détails… car je m’attardais trop aux détails en dessinant à l’encre.
