There are so many things to think about when starting a new painting. The obvious choices come first. What type of paper will I be using, cold pressed or hot pressed? What size paper? Sketchbook or loose sheet? Landscape or portrait mode? So without really thinking, I just jumped into this painting, and realized afterward that the paper proportion size was not right… I could not put my finger on it… until I realized that I had to crop it… or should have cropped it. So once my painting completed and scanned I decided to crop it just to see if my instincts were right! So the bottom picture is not cropped and the top one is. My spouse keeps telling that he prefers the full size one, but I prefer the cropped one. Any thoughts on this?
Il y a tellement de choses à penser avant de commencer à peindre. Premièrement, quel type de paper, pressé à froid ou à chaud? Cahier croquis ou feuilles lousses? Grandeur papier? Horizontal ou vertical? Donc sans vraiment réfléchir, j’ai commencé à peindre et tout au long que je peignais je me disais qu’il y avait quelque chose de “off” et je ne savais pas quoi. Jusqu’au temps que je réalise que la proportion (grandeur) n’était pas la bonne… donc j’ai décidé de recadrer la peinture une fois numérisée pour voir si mon instinct était bon, et je crois que oui. Mon conjoint préfère la pleine grandeur mais moi je préfère celle qui est recadrée. Qu’en pensez-vous?

Cropped works better for me somehow… I just love all the texture and fluent, fluid? color. Your work speaks so well to me and I love your explanations and background comments.

i’m not an artist but i like it full size. i like the textures in the cropped tree trunk and it fits with the wonky shutter.

Moi, je préfère pleine grandeur. Je sens davantage la profondeur et l’air qui y circule. Les chinois diraient qu’il y a du tchi dans ton dessin. Il y a davantage d’énergie en pleine grandeur dans ce joli dessin. Recadrer serré limite ce beau flux vital. C’est ma perception. L’autre version est aussi très belle, il va sans dire. La beauté de l’art réside dans les diverses interprétations qu’elle suscite auprès des gens. C’est bien ainsi.

Allô Jean-Pierre — Tu es la deuxième personne qui parle de l’air qui circule avec les deux arbres — très intéressant comme réflection! J’aime aussi ton idée de flux vital et de tchi… c’est tellement trippant d’avoir ton opinion car souvent je n’ai pas raison dans mon évaluation d’une peinture. Merci beaucoup Jean-Pierre -)
