On Friday I was in Westmount Park and looked up at this imposing and beautiful tower that houses the Public Library. As I was attending a watercolour workshop, here is one of the paintings that I did using a new technique that I learnt. Watercolours are really difficult to handle as the amount of water versus the amount of paint that one puts is crucial to the success, or failure, of the painting. Too much water and your colours are faded, not enough, and the painting looks scratchy. Oh my! I am so used to painting with a technical pen beforehand, that I felt a bit at a loss without the black contour lines in this picture…
J’ai fait cette peinture à partir d’une photo que j’ai prise vendredi, et une photographie n’arrive pas à traduire l’information autant que sur les lieux, peindre en plein-air. Mais faute de temps, car je vis quand même loin de Westmount, j’utilise cette façon de faire. La différence est qu’une photographie est unidimensionnel, n’a pas l’effet 3D et fige l’image dans le temps… une des choses qui est très intéressante est de courir après les ombres et les effets du soleil quand on est en plein-air. Entendre ce qui se passe, voir les choses qui bougent, tout ceci est perdu lorsqu’on peint d’une photo.
Pendant notre atelier vendredi, une femme peignait une personne qui était assise sur un banc… et tout d’un coup la personne part! Le point focal n’est plus là… et deux minutes plus tard, une autre personne est venue s’asseoir exactement au même endroit. C’est des belles surprises que le/la peintre reçoit en peignant en plein-air. Des clins d’oeil à la vie.
